The Ensembl “Geek for a Week” experience is a way for Ensembl software developers and our scientific collaborators to work in an intensive environment for short periods of time on the Wellcome Genome Campus in Hinxton, UK. Visiting “Geeks” will be assigned a desk within the Ensembl team at the EMBL-EBI and have an opportunity to work on their project with direct access to the developers who built the tools and the Ensembl scientists using these for data analysis. Here, we meet Yeorgia Argirou, who joined us in November 2022 as a “Geek for a Week”.

Ensembl 105 and Ensembl Genomes 52 are expected in October 2021. Check out what we’re up to, although we can’t guarantee everything listed here will make it into the final release.
Continue readingEnsembl 99 has been released!
We’re pleased to announce the release of Ensembl 99, and the corresponding release of Ensembl Genomes 46. Along with updates of human gene annotation and variation data, we have a menagerie of new and updated vertebrate species in Ensembl plus a whole set of new plants, mosquitos and flies in Ensembl Genomes.
What’s coming up in Ensembl release 99?
Ensembl 99 (and Ensembl Genomes 46) are due out in December and we plan to include a bumper set of new and updated species. As with all releases, we cannot guarantee that anything listed here will make it into the final release.
Getting to know us: Guy from Ensembl Plants
Today we are meeting Guy, who works in the Plants team of Ensembl Genomes. He talks about how he came to Ensembl, his interests and experiences so far.
Ensembl Genomes 42 is out!
We’ve just released Ensembl Genomes 42, with new and updated plant species, including soya and tomato, as well as three new species for Ensembl Metazoa.
Introducing the new IWGSC wheat genome assembly
One of the biggest highlights of the new Ensembl Plants release 40 is the inclusion of the new Wheat (RefSeq v1.0) genome from the International Wheat Genome Sequencing Consortium (IWGSC).
The path to sequencing the wheat genome has been no easy ride, due to its large and highly repetitive genome. This new assembly from the IWGSC bridges many gaps from the initial genome sequencing effort. Read on to find out more about this exciting new genome assembly!
Ensembl Genomes 40 has been released!
We’ve been tending the Ensembl Plants garden with great care, have cultivated several new species and updated a number of genome assemblies, including a new chromosome-level wheat genome from IWGSC. The protist team have also been busy and are proud to announce an updated assembly for Leishmania major.
Read on to find out more about these exciting new updates and more in this new release of Ensembl Genomes!
